Backup: Discovering The Full Potential of Automator and iPod

June 4, 2007 at 10:55 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

So I am heading back to Mishref this summer, and I needed to backup all the stuff I have on my iMac to my iPod. iPhoto and iCal are already synced so as the address book and music of course. Few folders remained not synced so I enabled the desk usage on the iPod and dragged and dropped the folders. Then I remembered a nifty tool called Automator. After spending 20 min’s I made up a workflow that whenever I plug my iPod it will:

1- Rename the files on the desktop by adding todays date after each of them

2- “clean up” the desktop by moving these file to a backup folder on my iMac

3- Copy all the new files to my iPod

This will make me miss my iMac for the whole summer. Luckily I got my macbook to play with meanwhile.

Cool OS X Dock Tricks

March 29, 2007 at 11:55 am (Uncategorized) (, )

I’ve been using these two tricks recently and I’ve found them great.

1- Drag the Application folder (or any other folder) to the dock beside the Trash.

2-Right Clicking this folder – or holding down the mouse pointer- will show up the contents facilitating a faster way to reach them.

3-Play around with the icons of these folders.

3a- Download some icons from IconFactory.

3b-Select any folder you like and get it’s info (apple+i).

3c-Get the info of the icon file itself.

3d-Now Copy the the image of the icon in from the icon info window and past it on the folder icon in the folder info window.

4-The result is a personalized less messy dock station!.

Mini-Review of NeoOffice 2.1 OS X (intel)

March 28, 2007 at 11:07 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Neooffice 2.1 is out !
NeoOffice Main Page
3 words. Practical,  Arabic, Free.

Two Days ago NeoOffice.Org released their latest version of the Office Documents Application. It now works natively on Intel mac’s without the need for X11 application.
As you can see the aqua look of the program blinds beautifully with the OS X .

I’ve quickly used it to open a ppt presentation which included notes with each slide. It wasn’t as practical as MS Office 2004 PowerPoint where you get an “IFrame” like window beneath each slide to view the notes attached. But it did work well in NeoOffice.

Impress !

The .xls files work great and you even get the taped spread sheets work as it should do.

So far the only disadvantage I’ve faced is how slow the program takes to load files. But once it does everything flows smoothly !.

Now the mac experience is complete.
